LUNCANI – PIATRA ROŞIE

The Piatra Roşie hill, with a height of 831m, on whose summit the citadel lays, is isolated at the end of the Luncani Valley.

The stone-built, rectangular shaped citadel (102m x 45m) has five towers, one on each corner and the fifth in the middle of the eastern edge. On the inside there was a wooden building whose stone foundation has been completely preserved. For collecting the water needed for the garrison, there is a hole carved into a rock in the north-eastern corner.

Outside the citadel, the traces of a sanctuary can be seen. It consists of rows of stone column foundations. On the eastern side of the hill a second fortification with stone and palisade walls had an edge which leaned upon one side against the summit fortification thus having an inner paved path.

On the access path to the Piatra Roşie citadel three watch towers were placed.

The citadel, part of the Dacian fortification system was tasked to block the advance from the direction of the Strei Valley, of enemies trying to attack the Dacian state.
